“And the word of God increased; and the
number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of
the priests were obedient to the faith.” Acts 6:7
Dear brothers and sisters,
The Book of Acts chronicles the explosive
expansion of Christ’s Church in the first century. Without using gimmicks,
tricks, or games, a small number of Jesus’ disciples turned the world upside
down (Acts 17:6). What started with a mustard seed took root and stretched
across the Mediterranean world. How did such a small number fill Jerusalem with
their doctrine and make disciples as far away as Antioch, Ephesus, and Rome?
The record tells us, “the word of God increased.” (Acts 6:7, 12:24) Through the
preached Word, the apostles and their assistants exported Christ’s truth. What
was the fruit of such labors? “The hand of the Lord was with them: and a great
number believed, and turned unto the Lord.” (Acts 11:21)
we rightly shun obsession with numbers, we should not be complacent. We are
soldiers, not spectators. We are fighters, not spiritual pacifists. We are
intentional, not passive. How ought we carry the banner of Christ? What weapons
should we sharpen? What fruit should we expect? Under the power of the Holy Spirit,
we as a young and growing church ought to do several things:
Embrace the Lord’s Day. Morning and
evening worship are training ground.
Pursue personal holiness. Spiritual
disciplines equip you with strength for the battle.
Celebrate the truth. Learn what the
Church believes, and relish the savor of sound doctrine.
Seek to win others to the truth. Lead
people to embrace what you love.
Pray for opportunities to speak the Word
to others. The Word spreads as Christians seize
opportunities to speak.
Plead for the outpouring of the Holy
Spirit. We do not need better methods, we just need more of the Spirit’s power. You do not need a different
personality; Christ gives you everything
you need to effectively move the ball downfield.
Do we not want to see Biblical
Christianity flourish in the Panhandle? To lead scores of people to faith in
Jesus and obedience to Him? Pray that the Word would increase, that disciples
would multiply, and that Scriptural truth would hold sway.
It is a joy to labor with you.
